Mrs. Hudak is a 7th grade English teacher at Rawlinson Road Middle School, she started a project at the school that has been going on for two years now. I asked why did she wanted to start this project at RRMS? Mrs. Hudak said she wanted to start the project after reading the book A Long Walk to Water by: Linda Sue Park with her students from last year. She wanted her students to realize how powerful their actions can be when they work hard to help others that are less fortunate than themselves. She also spoke with the representatives from Salva’s organization , Water for South Sudan. She also found out that when we raise $5,000 we could have a banner with Rawlinson Road Middle School’s name on it, and that instantly became a goal for her students.
Each time she reads the book A Long Walk to Water by: Linda Sue Park she said, “That it keeps on touching my heart and I understand it even more each time I read it.” She has also spoke with Salva’s Chief Administrative Officer (Lynn Malooly) in New York. Together they developed the plan to raise $5,000 so that we could have a well drilled in honor of Rawlinson Road Middle School. Mrs. Hudak and her students have conducted some research on South Sudan and their lack of clean water. Her class found out about water borne diseases and they have designed brochures showing the results of drinking unclean water. There were some ideas for the project that have been carried out within the school like: selling breakfast, making bracelets, and putting together walks on the track of the school. Mrs. Hudak put together a group for making up ideas for the project and they have made many successful projects for the school to raise money for the people of South Sudan.
We still have not reached the goal of $5,000 but we have passed the half point! It won’t be much longer until we get to our goal, the school together raised over $3,700 with the purchases of tickets and other items, but some of it has been donated from students and staff at Rawlinson Road Middle School. We are trying to help the people of South Sudan in every way we can and we are so close to building a well in South Sudan. We are proud to help South Sudan build its nation again so they can have more opportunities in their nation for school and hospitals of their own. We are still trying to find other ways to raise money for this project.
